Two sessions tell different stories for Felbermayr
Emma Felbermayr began the F1 Academy weekend in Austin with the fastest time in its only practice session, then finished qualifying ninth on the fastest-lap classification. That contrast on Thursday 22 October changes the reading of her opening day: encouraging practice pace did not deliver the desired Feature Race starting position. Before qualifying, the Audi-backed Rodin Motorsport driver had explained that she wanted every available point to keep pressure on championship leader Alisha Palmowski. Her comments belong to that earlier moment and should be read alongside the session result that followed, rather than as a reaction to qualifying.
What the practice times showed
Felbermayr recorded 2:08.949 in practice, leading Palmowski by 0.178 seconds. It provided a useful foundation, although the Austrian herself qualified what the result meant: she did not know her rivals’ run plans, tyre choices or how hard they had pushed on each attempt. Practice P1 can indicate potential without establishing the definitive competitive order. That caution, expressed before qualifying, matters when comparing the two sessions. It keeps an encouraging headline from becoming a stronger claim about underlying pace than the available information supports.
| Session | Pos | Time | Reference |
|---|---|---|---|
| Practice | 1 | 2:08.949 | 0.178s ahead of Palmowski |
| Qualifying · fastest lap | 9 | 2:08.767 | 1.053s behind Palmowski |
A quicker lap, but a different competitive order
In qualifying, Felbermayr improved to 2:08.767, a gain of 0.182 seconds against her own practice benchmark. Palmowski, however, reached 2:07.714. The final gap of 1.053 seconds explains why topping the earlier session was insufficient. The calculation describes the published times rather than identifying a technical cause: track evolution, tyres, traffic and run plans cannot be isolated from these two numbers. The sources checked do not provide a diagnosis linking the result to a specific problem. A change in position and an improvement in lap time can therefore coexist without contradiction.

The real circuit differed from the simulator
Speaking after practice and before qualifying, Felbermayr explained that the circuit had felt different from her simulator preparation and the video references from 2023. By the end of practice she had found a better rhythm, while still seeing room to improve. Circuit of the Americas presents a positioning challenge: through the sequence from Turns 2 to 6, a poor entry can compromise the following lines. She also highlighted the long approach to the first corner, which requires patience before reaching the apex. Those observations describe the adaptation work behind the lap time.
How Abbi Pulling is helping Rodin
Rodin Motorsport has support in Austin from 2024 F1 Academy champion Abbi Pulling, who raced at the circuit in 2023. Felbermayr highlighted the value of her experience, including lessons from a weekend that had been challenging. The support is practical: discussing racing lines, approaches previously tried and how one corner shapes the next. With just one practice session before qualifying, there was limited track time to turn that information into competitive laps. Pulling’s presence adds an experienced reference without guaranteeing a particular result or removing the need for the driver to adapt.
APEX analysis: the focus moves to race execution
Felbermayr entered Austin with 88 points, 48 behind Palmowski. Those are pre-qualifying reference figures, rather than a championship table recalculated after the pole bonus. Three races with different scoring scales remain, so one session does not settle the sporting picture by itself. Her next question is how much she can recover through starts, pace and race decisions. Ninth in fastest-lap qualifying concerns the Feature Race grid before penalties; the Opening Race uses each driver’s second-fastest lap. The official qualifying results remain labelled provisional at publication. Keeping those distinctions clear is essential when judging what her opening day means.
