The contract is confirmed, the sponsor comes later

AJ Foyt Racing announced a multiyear agreement with Josh Pierson on October 27, beginning with the 2027 IndyCar season. The American will drive the No. 4 Chevrolet. A new sponsor for that program will be revealed later. The confirmation completes the team’s driver pairing for next year, following its agreement with Dennis Hauger. Pierson will therefore move into his first season in the main championship after his time in INDY NXT.

The season behind his promotion

Pierson’s official INDY NXT profile lists him 11th in the final 2026 standings, with 364 points from 17 starts. His Andretti Global campaign produced one victory, two poles, three top-five finishes and eight top-10 results. He led 108 laps. Those numbers provide two different reference points: his position across a full season and the speed he demonstrated on particular weekends. Both deserve a place in the assessment of a driver moving into a new category.

Laguna Seca delivered the breakthrough

His first victory arrived on September 5 in the opening race of the Laguna Seca doubleheader. Pierson started from pole and led all 35 laps, finishing 2.6294 seconds ahead of Nikita Johnson. He handled three restarts during that race. It was his 53rd start in the category, less than a week after he had crashed out of the lead at Milwaukee. That contrast helps explain the attention surrounding the closing stages of his season.

Hauger supplies a reference within the team

Dennis Hauger had been announced at AJ Foyt Racing on September 16, also on a multiyear agreement. The Norwegian will drive the No. 14 Chevrolet with support from Homes For Our Troops. He won the 2025 INDY NXT title with Andretti Global and became IndyCar Rookie of the Year in 2026 while racing for Dale Coyne Racing. The pairing therefore brings together two recent graduates of the same development category at different stages of their adjustment to IndyCar.

What to watch in his opening races

APEX analysis: the first useful measure for Pierson will be how consistently he turns preparation into a complete race weekend. A strong qualifying lap needs to be followed by sound decisions in traffic and the avoidance of mistakes that compromise a race. Comparison with Hauger can provide context, although their results will also need to be understood through the strategies they use. One finishing position cannot describe an entire adaptation. Repeatable pace and progress from one event to the next should tell us more.

The first calendar marker: St. Petersburg

The official schedule places the opening round of the 2027 season at St. Petersburg on March 7. Phoenix follows on March 13, then Arlington on March 21, a sequence that will quickly change the nature of the challenge. Start times remain unspecified in the schedule checked for this article. Before the opening weekend, the confirmed information is the agreement with Foyt; the performance of the future package will have to be judged on track.
