Interlagos changes with measured expectations
McLaren will introduce changes to its car during the São Paulo Grand Prix weekend. Speaking on Thursday, 5 November, Lando Norris hoped they would deliver progress without presenting them as a guaranteed solution. Formula 1’s report, published that evening, describes a driver who sees potential in the car but also recognises how difficult it can be to turn that potential into repeatable performance at the limit. Track running will provide the first evidence.
Faster does not automatically mean more predictable
Norris explained that the changes could improve performance without making the car easier to drive; a more difficult response remains possible too. The team wants to improve both outright capability and the way its drivers can access it. The official report does not identify the package’s components in detail or give a verified lap-time gain. Assigning a number of tenths before the changes have been tested would go beyond the information available from the driver’s comments.
McLaren’s championship context
The official constructors’ table puts McLaren fourth on 365 points, behind Red Bull Racing’s 382. That 17-point difference provides a concrete reference for the remaining part of the season. These are the totals after Mexico, before running in Brazil. Kimi Antonelli has already secured the drivers’ title, but McLaren’s sporting objectives extend beyond that trophy: every race result can still affect the team’s championship position. None of the figures includes a São Paulo result.
What practice can reveal
APEX analysis: a useful indication will be whether the drivers can repeat a similar level of lap performance without major corrections or compromises between corners. One quick lap would not explain the entire change, while differing fuel loads and tyre programmes complicate direct practice comparisons. The opening sessions can therefore supply observations rather than a definitive verdict. Norris returns to a circuit where he won in 2025, but that result does not establish how the updated 2026 car will behave in this weekend’s conditions.
