Two individual decisions after Friday’s incident

Max Verstappen and Liam Lawson each received a one-place grid penalty for the next race in which they compete after their Mexico FP2 contact. The stewards issued separate decisions: Document 33 for the Red Bull driver and Document 34 for the Racing Bulls driver. Each also receives one penalty point on his licence. The verdict is separate from the practice classification and does not yet establish their actual starting positions for the race.

Grid sanctions and licence-point totals

The table separates the grid drop from the licence points. The documents record different totals over the 12-month period: one for Verstappen and four for Lawson. APEX’s reading is that receiving the same sanction for this incident does not mean having an identical accumulated disciplinary record. Reading the total alongside the newly added point avoids confusing a driver’s history with the decision taken now. Both values serve a different purpose in the record.

Contact came through the stadium section

Formula 1’s account describes Verstappen making a move towards Turn 12 and Lawson attempting to regain the position at the following left-hander. The contact damaged the Red Bull’s floor and the Racing Bulls’ front wing. Debris prompted a brief red flag. Both resumed their programmes, with Verstappen finishing the session fifth and Lawson ninth. Those places describe practice and should be kept separate from the application of a race starting grid or the drivers’ eventual qualifying results.

Why the stewards went beyond a warning

The FIA’s reasoning states that Verstappen was on a preparation lap and Lawson on a cooling lap before another quick attempt. The teams had already received a warning at the managers’ meeting. The stewards also considered similar practice incidents and chose a grid drop rather than a formal warning.

What remains to be established before the race

APEX analysis: the practical effect can be assessed once the qualifying result and official grid are available. Before those documents, assigning either driver a specific starting place would be premature. The confirmed information is the individual sanction and the application specified by the stewards. Saturday’s qualifying begins at 23:00 in Romania. Until then, the disciplinary decision, the sporting performance in the session and the published race starting order remain separate stages of the weekend.
