Stay on track and maintain your pace
An overcut is the opposite tactic to an undercut. A driver tries to gain time by staying out after a rival has stopped. They may have clean air, tyres that remain effective or an advantage over a rival warming up fresh tyres.
The right window
The tactic is sensitive to degradation. If old tyres lose too much pace, waiting costs a position. Track temperature, tyre compound and the rival’s rejoining position all matter.
An advantage for the finish
A late stop can produce a shorter final stint on fresher tyres. That does not automatically mean the overcut has worked: success is assessed through position, pace and the team’s objective.
