The podium that opens the first title opportunity

Kimi Antonelli finished third in the Singapore Grand Prix, behind Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc. Sunday's 15 points, added to his five from the Sprint, took him to 340. George Russell finished ninth in the race and left the weekend with only two points. The gap between the Mercedes drivers increased from 84 to 102 points. Formula1.com confirms that Austin becomes the first weekend at which Antonelli can mathematically settle the title fight.

The post-Singapore standings: Russell is not the only benchmark

The table uses the points published after the October 11 race, cross-checked against the Formula 1 standings. The gaps are calculated relative to Antonelli; they are not points still available. Hamilton remains relevant to the Austin scenario: he is 111 points behind the leader and could prevent the championship being settled even if Russell has a poor result.

Why the Austin threshold is 125 points

Formula 1 identifies six remaining races and a maximum of 150 points still available. After Austin, five Grands Prix will remain, worth 125 points to a driver. The official October 23–25 Circuit of The Americas schedule has three practice sessions, qualifying and the race, without a Sprint. The calculation below assumes full points in Austin, an unchanged remaining calendar and classifications without subsequent amendments. Race points are 25–18–15–12–10–8–6–4–2–1; the 2026 regulations do not add a point for fastest lap.

The full conditions: a win, Russell ninth or lower, Hamilton fifth or lower

A victory would take Antonelli to 365 points. Russell must stay at no more than 240: ninth earns two points, whereas eighth earns four. Hamilton must also remain at no more than 240: fifth takes him to 239, but fourth to 241. In an Antonelli victory scenario, Verstappen can score at most 18 points, reaching 239; the other drivers are further behind. That is why Hamilton's condition cannot be omitted from a complete calculation.

Scenarios for Sunday's Austin race

The table contains conditional examples, not predictions. A second-placed Antonelli, even with Russell outside the points, would have only a 120-point lead over the Briton: insufficient while 125 points remain available. A win, however, can be enough with an exact 125-point lead because of the tie-break.

The points tie-break and Antonelli's response

Article A2.1 of the FIA regulations gives priority to the number of race wins. Antonelli has eight before Austin, Russell three. If the Italian wins in Texas, he reaches nine; Russell could reach at most eight by winning all five remaining races. A final points tie would therefore favour Antonelli. He has not declared himself champion, however: in the reaction published by Formula 1 he focused on producing the best possible weekends and finishing the job. Mercedes reports progress in understanding its new package, while stressing the need to find its optimum operating window.

Austin is an opportunity, not a title already won

The APEX conclusion is strictly mathematical: under the current conditions the title can be settled in Austin, but only through the combination of results described. It is not enough for Antonelli to win and Russell to miss the points if Hamilton finishes in the top four. The next race takes place on October 25. Points and rules must be checked again against that event's official classification, including any reduced-points situation or subsequent FIA decisions.
