A concrete step after the return announcement

Dreyer & Reinbold Racing completed a Barber Motorsports Park road-course test with Conor Daly on October 26. In its November 2 report, IndyCar describes the outing as an important step towards the team’s full-time return in 2027. It was the organisation’s first road-course running since 2020. The test date and the report date are different: the latest information concerns an assessment of work already completed.

From Indianapolis to an entire season

The team continued entering the Indianapolis 500, but its last full-time season was in 2012. Expanding requires personnel, equipment and procedures for different types of circuit. Daly explained that reaching Barber and completing laps without problems was itself an operational achievement. His comments emphasise preparing the group rather than placing the car in a comparative test ranking. That is a useful distinction when judging a programme growing beyond its recent focus.

The driver and the project’s foundations are announced

Daly was confirmed on September 5 on a multiyear agreement for the number 24 entry. July’s announcement of the purchase of a charter from Rahal Letterman Lanigan preceded that stage of the project. For the driver, this continues a relationship already involving Indianapolis appearances. For the organisation, Barber adds road-course running to an operation whose recent programmes have centred on the 500-mile race.

What Barber can tell us about 2027

APEX analysis: a credible return first becomes visible in the ability to prepare a car, run it and turn the driver’s observations into work for the next session. The test provides evidence about that stage without establishing the team’s pace relative to rivals in the coming season. Useful milestones will include continuity in preparation and results across different tracks. Daly’s enthusiasm is understandable; a competitive assessment needs comparisons under relevant conditions. The difference between expanding an operation and demonstrating race speed makes this a project to follow over time, rather than one to judge from a single encouraging test report.
