A champion in unfamiliar machinery
Alex Palou finished the Chris Griffis Memorial Test on 16 October with the fastest lap, a 1:14.5050 around the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course. The IndyCar champion drove Chip Ganassi Racing’s No. 11 entry in his first experience of INDY NXT machinery. His participation supplied an unusual reference during a day devoted to preparation and evaluation. The result belongs in that context: this was an autumn test with potentially different objectives between participants, rather than a race or a qualifying session for a new season. Fastest remains a meaningful result without answering every question about performance.
Kucharczyk heads the regular competitors
Tymek Kucharczyk placed second overall with a 1:14.8209 for HMD Motorsports. The calculated difference to Palou was 0.3159 seconds, making the Polish driver the quickest of the category’s regular competitors. Max Taylor, Max Garcia and Jack Beeton completed the top five. Kucharczyk had finished his rookie season third in the standings with two victories. The Indianapolis result adds continuity to that competitive record, but does not turn a test classification into a reliable ranking for the 2027 championship or every type of circuit. It is evidence of speed in one particular setting.
More than the fastest lap
The 22 cars completed a combined 1,573 laps. That volume creates opportunities to learn, compare settings and become familiar with a different team. For a driver, repeating a lap or explaining a change in handling can be as useful as producing a single peak time. Those are editorial criteria for interpretation; the public information does not allow a complete comparison of every participant’s programme. Without common details about tyres, fuel and the timing of each run, differences on the stopwatch cannot be assigned exclusively to a driver’s ability or a team’s underlying strength.
What deserves attention next
Palou gave Ganassi a point of comparison while working in the same environment as drivers at an earlier stage of their careers. For those competitors, the value of the day can continue in subsequent data analysis rather than ending with the final timing sheet. When assessing future announcements, participation in a test should be separated from confirmation of a full-season seat. Kucharczyk’s performance is a positive indication of speed at Indianapolis. Establishing sustained progress will still require repeated results under racing conditions and across a wider calendar, where preparation must survive traffic, changing circumstances and the pressure of competition.
