What Brown said, and when
Zak Brown believes Oscar Piastri is feeling more confident in the McLaren again. The assessment appears in Formula 1’s article published on 16 October, but the remarks came at Singapore’s Friday press conference on 9 October. This is an assessment of driver adaptation, rather than confirmation of a new upgrade or race-winning speed.
Two questions about the same car
In the FIA press conference, Brown connects Piastri’s development with the challenge of extracting performance from the new generation of cars. APEX perspective: confidence concerns how consistently a driver can reach the car’s limit. Competitiveness concerns where that limit sits relative to rivals. Progress in the first area can be real even when the finishing position does not immediately improve.
What Piastri recovered in Singapore
McLaren’s report records a slow front-right puncture and an additional stop on Lap 41. Piastri continued on used Softs, passed Hamilton late in the race and finished fifth. The table compares the two cars’ starting and finishing positions; it does not measure outright pace.
| Driver | Start | Finish |
|---|---|---|
| Oscar Piastri | 6 | 5 |
| Lando Norris | 5 | 4 |
Why the result is not the whole story
In its strategy review published on 15 October, McLaren explains how the Virtual Safety Car changed relative tyre advantages and the targets of the race. A snapshot of the classification hides those changes. For a useful comparison, ask whether drivers have similarly aged tyres, comparable traffic and the same phase of a stint. The finishing position remains the result; the conditions explain the route to it.
What to watch in Austin
The standard weekend’s three practice sessions offer more opportunities for comparison, without guaranteeing definitive answers. Watch lap consistency and both drivers’ comments about balance. One quick time does not prove the problem has disappeared. APEX will distinguish statements, official results and editorial interpretation. The opening photograph shows Piastri in China in March 2026; it does not depict an Austin session that has already taken place.
