Hamilton’s first Grand Prix pole with Ferrari
Lewis Hamilton won Mexico City Grand Prix qualifying with a 1:16.514. It is his first Grand Prix pole with Ferrari and the 105th of his Formula 1 career, according to the official report. George Russell finished just 0.009 seconds behind, with Charles Leclerc third. The session took place on Saturday 31 October in Mexico City, ahead of Sunday’s Grand Prix.
Five drivers separated by less than two tenths
Max Verstappen and Kimi Antonelli complete the leading five in the provisional classification. The gap from Hamilton to Antonelli is 0.193 seconds, calculated from their Q3 times. The table records the session result before sanctions are applied and the grid is published. APEX’s reading is that a nine-thousandths margin between the leading two makes precise execution over a lap the central reference point of this qualifying session.
| Pos | Driver | Q3 time | Gap |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Lewis Hamilton | 1:16.514 | — |
| 2 | George Russell | 1:16.523 | +0.009 s |
| 3 | Charles Leclerc | 1:16.633 | +0.119 s |
| 4 | Max Verstappen | 1:16.692 | +0.178 s |
| 5 | Kimi Antonelli | 1:16.707 | +0.193 s |
Ferrari found more time in the deciding segment
The FIA timing sheet shows Hamilton improving from a 1:16.953 in Q2 to a 1:16.514 in Q3, a calculated gain of 0.439 seconds. Leclerc had been quicker in Q2 with a 1:16.944, but their order reversed in the final phase. APEX analysis: this progression explains why a team-mate comparison should follow the whole session. An intermediate reference does not automatically capture the level accessed during the attempt for pole.

Piastri stops in Q2, Alonso in Q1
Oscar Piastri is listed 13th in the provisional document, behind Nico Hülkenberg and Franco Colapinto. Fernando Alonso is 18th, with four laps recorded. Formula 1 reports that Aston Martin instructed him to abandon the session because of a suspected water-pressure issue linked to the ERS system. For McLaren and Aston Martin, these results therefore leave different questions before the race: turning speed into a decisive lap, and maintaining continuity in running.
Provisional classification and a technical case for Lawson
The FIA classification consulted is provisional. The technical delegate referred a case concerning the MGU-K power requirements of Liam Lawson’s car to the stewards, while Document 55 summons the driver and team representative. Those documents do not establish a penalty. The starting order depends on the applicable decisions, separately from the session’s times. Lawson’s final grid position therefore remains to be established. The race is scheduled for Sunday 1 November at 22:00 in Romania.
