Austin brings two objectives into focus

The United States Grand Prix starts on Sunday, 25 October at 22:00 in Romania. Kimi Antonelli has pole position and an opportunity to settle the championship, but a full race still lies ahead. Max Verstappen starts second with Isack Hadjar directly behind him. For Red Bull, having both drivers in the top three provides a strong platform for an attack. For Mercedes, the opening phase will matter before the teams’ different race strategies begin to take shape.

The starting grid after penalties

Leclerc and Hamilton occupy fourth and fifth, followed by Russell. McLaren starts with Piastri seventh and Norris eighth. This is the grid published by Formula 1, which is separate from the unadjusted qualifying classification. Lindblad drops to 14th after a five-place penalty, Colapinto is 21st after losing ten positions and Bortoleto completes the grid following his cumulative 80-place sanction. The order below provides the relevant starting point for following the race rather than revisiting the qualifying times alone.

The championship conditions published by Formula 1

F1.com’s published scenario requires Antonelli to win, Russell to finish ninth or lower and Hamilton to finish fifth or lower. Antonelli has 340 points, putting him 102 ahead of his team-mate and 111 ahead of Hamilton. Starting positions do not settle those conditions: Russell and Hamilton can move forward, while Antonelli still has to convert pole into victory. The championship calculation therefore needs to be followed alongside the actual race positions, rather than treated as an outcome already secured on Saturday.

Why long-run pace could keep the contest open

In the public introduction to its strategy analysis, F1.com estimates a spread of just 0.12 seconds between the leading four teams on long-run pace. That is a pre-race estimate, influenced by the circumstances in which the comparisons were made. It nevertheless provides a concrete reason to watch pit stops, traffic and tyre behaviour. If the differences remain small, access to clear track could play an important role in how the contest develops at the front, even when the grid initially puts one driver in control.

Ferrari faces the straight-line test

After qualifying, Hamilton explained that the car felt good but Ferrari was losing ground to its rivals on the straights. This is the driver’s assessment rather than a public measurement of a power difference between engines. From fourth and fifth, Ferrari needs to combine its cornering performance with overtaking opportunities and an effective strategy. The race will offer a clearer indication of how much that limitation affects the ability to follow closely and complete a pass, especially when the cars are running in traffic.

Romanian start time and the key phases to watch

The official timetable places lights out at 15:00 in Austin, equivalent to 22:00 in Romania after the switch to winter time. The opening laps will show whether Antonelli can control the race or whether Verstappen and Hadjar force him to respond. Later, the comparison between stint times and the teams’ pit stops will complete the picture. These are the questions ahead of the Grand Prix; the answers about victory and a possible championship conclusion still have to be decided on track.
