The compromise that defines aerodynamics

A wing can generate downforce, but usually adds drag too. Downforce helps the tyres transmit greater forces in corners. Drag requires energy to maintain speed. Engineers seek efficiency, rather than simply the highest possible downforce figure.

Straight Mode and Corner Mode

The 2026 regulations allow aerodynamic elements to be adjusted under the conditions set by the FIA. The configuration for straights reduces drag, while the corner configuration prioritises downforce. This system is distinct from Overtake Mode, which concerns electrical energy delivery.

Balance must be maintained

Changing the rear wing can shift aerodynamic balance. The front and rear of the car therefore need to be considered together. Being fast on the straight is not enough: the car must remain predictable under braking and on corner entry.

What a photograph cannot show

The visible shape does not reveal every operating condition. Speed, ride height, the angle to the airflow and mechanical settings change the outcome. The archive photograph illustrates wing geometry without documenting the active system used in 2026. The diagram explains the principle; comparing teams would require data and observations from the same context.
