A flap that reduced drag
DRS stands for Drag Reduction System. Opening an element of the rear wing reduced aerodynamic drag, allowing the car to accelerate more easily on a straight. The system was introduced to Formula 1 in 2011.
The conditions for using DRS
In a race, use depended on approved zones and usually a gap of no more than one second at the detection point. Race control could suspend its use in unsuitable conditions. Activation rules and the point at which it became available evolved over the years.
In 2026, watch two different concepts
DRS must be distinguished from active aerodynamics and Overtake Mode. The former changes the aerodynamic configuration for corners or straights. The latter provides an opportunity to deploy electrical energy under the regulations. This guide describes the old DRS, not a current overtaking rule.
