Two kinds of weekend
Formula 1 and the FIA announced the 2027 schedule on September 16, with 24 Grands Prix and ten Sprint weekends. For viewers, the practical change is straightforward: at more rounds, the first session that sets a starting grid arrives on Friday. A race calendar and the timetable for individual sessions remain different documents, however. A weekend date should never automatically be treated as the starting time of its Grand Prix.
Monaco gets a Sprint
Bahrain, Australia, Japan, Monaco and Abu Dhabi will stage the format for the first time. The other five announced Sprint venues are Canada, Great Britain, Italy, Brazil and Qatar. Monaco will therefore have two qualifying sessions, one for the Sprint and another for the main race. APEX interpretation: on a circuit where track position matters so much, keeping those two grids separate is fundamental to understanding the competitive picture.
Portimão and Istanbul return
Portugal reappears during the European part of the schedule, while Türkiye slots between Azerbaijan and Singapore. Formula 1 previously raced at Portimão and Istanbul Park in 2020 and 2021. A familiar venue name does not justify recycling its old timetable. Infrastructure, procedures and session times need checking for the new edition. The Monaco photograph accompanying this guide is an archive view of the venue, rather than evidence of a Sprint already held in the Principality.
Preparation time becomes compressed
The Sprint format explained by F1 leaves just one practice session. APEX analysis: teams must reach a workable setup more quickly and distinguish an experiment from a representative performance reference. That does not mean the team that starts fastest will automatically win on Sunday. Track evolution, tyre condition and traffic can all alter the comparison between competitive sessions, making one early result an incomplete description of the weekend.
Build a useful viewing plan
First identify the round and its weekend format, then check the published session times. Record the time zone and local date, particularly when the championship changes continents. A calendar saved months in advance should be checked again as the event approaches. If you also follow Formula 2 or F1 Academy, examine their support schedules separately: one appearance at a Formula 1 event does not establish a series' presence throughout the season.
What is confirmed
This guide covers the announced 2027 calendar and Sprint venues. It does not present future results or assign hypothetical championship points to real drivers. Detailed session timetables and any subsequent official revisions will matter before each weekend. Treat the season calendar as a route map and the session timetable as the practical tool for race day.
